Step 1

Prepare the dough: Combine egg, warm milk, warm water, sunflower oil, grape vinegar, activated fresh yeast, salt and about 500 grams of flour in a bowl. Knead a smooth dough and leave to rise in a warm place.

Step 2

Once the dough has risen, divide the dough into 7 equal parts. Roll out each part very thinly.

Step 3

Place each flatbread on a tray greased with melted butter and grease the top with melted butter again. Stack all 7 layers on top of each other and grease the last layer as well.

Step 4

Cut the stacked dough into wide strips. Wrap each strip around your fingers and then form it into a ring shape.

Step 5

Leave the shaped rings to rise for 15-20 minutes.

Step 6

Heat the butter and sunflower oil mixture in a pot and fry the qatlamas until golden, turning them with a fork to help the layers separate.

Step 7

Drain the oil from the finished qatlamas on paper towels and sprinkle powdered sugar on top while hot.
